Juárez Market
Juárez Market was built in 1935. However, due to social conflicts and at least 2 devastating hurricanes during the 19th century, it suffered quite a few amendments. The surname Juárez honored the mortality of indigenous president Benito Juárez, an absolute Mexican legend.
Matamoros depended completely on this market’s supplies during the 20th century: meat and fruit stands, restaurants, herb stores, pharmacies, shoes, handicrafts, jewelry, curios and liquor stores; soda fountains, clothing stores and all kinds of other things were all found in the perimeter of the market… until the 1960”s, when a overwhelming fire totally burned it all out.
A walk through downtown”s pedestrian walkway will take you right into the market, located at Abasólo and 9th street.
A perfect visit ¡if you are in the need for a nice Mexican souvenir!
