In spite of the fact that the beach can be found at some 35 kilometers east of Matamoros, for over a 100 years has been a vacation attraction for the matamorenses.
Between 1860 and 1910 it existed in the estuary of the Bravo an important port called Baghdad, in which the products of sea ships were transferred to river ships that navigated the river to Camargo and from time to time to New Laredo.

The first name that the beach had was Washington, because a small ship of this name was stranded and remained in the beach for years and the people said: “We are going to see the Washington”.

In the 1970”s it was named Lauro Villar Beach, in honor of the Matamoros general that defended Mr. Francisco I. Madero in the National Palace in the time the Tragic Dozen was initiated.

In 1991 City Hall agreed to call it Baghdad Beach in memory of the port that once existed there.  The beach has  drinking water, palapas (palm umbrellas), restaurant and security.
